Waldorf Astoria New York will reopen this spring following a multiyear restoration and revamp, parent company Hilton announced Monday.
New York-headquartered architecture collective Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Paris- and Chicago-based interior design firm Pierre-Yves Rochon led the renovation effort, which retained many of the building’s historic elements while adding modern enhancements, Hilton said.
Renovations touched the guest rooms, the majority of which exceed 570 square feet and include Art Deco accents, according to Hilton. The reopened hotel will also feature a 30,000-square-foot spa, fitness center and outdoor terrace.
“Visitors returning to the property will notice many of the historical elements, from the Grand Ballroom to the lobby with the famous Waldorf Astoria clock, have been restored to bring back the original grandeur, while thoughtful enhancements were incorporated for today’s traveler,” said the hotel’s managing director, Luigi Romaniello, in a statement.
The hotel’s signature restaurant, the two-story American brasserie Lex Yard, will be helmed by chef Michael Anthony. Waldorf Astoria’s “reimagined” Peacock Alley bar and lounge will also return to the property
Waldorf Astoria New York will include 43,000 square feet of event space and offer on-site event planners and managers and a production consultant. The property’s Grand Ballroom, Jade Room, Astor Salon, Basildon Room and Silver Corridor were all restored to “elevate” their original Art Deco details while modernizing the spaces, according to Hilton.
The historic hotel, which opened in 1931, closed in 2017 for renovations.
Dino Michael, senior vice president global head for Hilton’s luxury brands, said the hotel’s reopening “marks the beginning of a bold new era for our brand,” noting that the flag will soon open more properties in Costa Rica, Japan and the U.K.
In Florida, Hilton renovated its Waldorf Astoria Orlando, which reopened earlier this year. The multiphase revamp was the property’s largest enhancement since its 2009 opening.
The brand is also underway on a 92-unit luxury residential development in Pompano Beach, Florida, slated to open in 2026.
